Mission San
Francisco de la Espada, San Antonio, Texas (2003)
Mission Espada was
the southernmost of all the San Antonio Mission chain. It was founded on March
5, 1731 and its first buildings were made of adobe and thatch. Because of its
isolation, Mission Espada suffered from frequent attacks by Apache and
Comanche indians. A perimeter wall was constructed later on to protect the
people from such raids.
